Notes
Rockwood &Co. was hired by R.M. Hunt to photograph the Griswold House in a number of views; most originals are in the AIA Hunt collection, now presumably in the Library of Congress.
Richard Morris Hunt possessed a genius for marketing, and from a young age he cultivated family contacts and networked in the world of art and business. Notwithstanding a well known artist brother, William Morris Hunt, and socially connected in-laws, Hunt's early and enduring successes in American architecture and architectural education were largely the result of his own efforts. For instance, after completing the John N.A. Griswold House in Newport in 1864, he hired the New York firm of Rockwood & Co. to photograph the house. He then presented his old friend Henry G. Marquand-and perhaps others-with a large framed copy, inscribed "with the kind regards of R.M.Hunt." A few years later Marquand commissioned Hunt to build Linden Gate, his own Newport cottage.
