Tall case clock, stepped up hood, having brass ball finials, arched doorway with two columnar stiles, arched pendulum door, stepped up base having bracket feet, Japanned black laquered case with gilt foliage, birds and figures of people, inscribed William Claggett, Newport, R.I., moon and star dial with brass calendar in archway with scrolled chased sides, two spread winged eagles with four corner spandrels, brass dial with black Roman numerals, chased silvered insert with day of week, strike or silent, upper left small dial with Roman numerals in upper right, lower left corner small dial numbered 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 31, lower right small dial inscribed with months Jan. thru Dec., paper inside door reading William Claggett Clock case brought by Capt. John Stanton in one of his ships, 3 weights and brass pendulum in bottom case, height approximately 92", width of base 20" (some restorations).
Antique American tall case clock, jappaned decoration, on poplar basewood; having a double domed hooded top above a conforming shaped glazed door revealing a silvered brass dial with Roman numerals, spandrals, signed William Claggett, Newport; brass movement having strike-silent indicator, date wheel, triangular cutout to dial with day indicator, three wieghts; having an arched domed door to case, bracket foot base, bottom square of clock having been reduced in height, feet replaced, jappaned decoration on case having been heavily restored; 90" tall overall, circa 1740. The Captain John Stanton Queen Anne japanned tall case clock, by William Claggett, Newport, R.I., circa 1728, the hood with three brass ball and sphere finials above a sarcophagus pediment over an arch glazed door opening to an elaborately engraved brass dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring enclosing sweep seconds ring and calendar day aperture, the brass spandrels embellished with an engraved dial flanked by colonetts above a waisted case with arched cupboard door over a box base on bracket feet, the entire surface with japanned painted and gilt decorations (lower half of base restored, some paint restored) Height: 102 inches.
