Description
PORTRAIT OF CHARLOTTE WARREN GREENOUGH (French, c. 1908) by Paul César Helleu (French, 1859-1927). The subject, Charlotte Warren Greenough (1885-1957), wife of William Greennough, is depicted at bust length, facing left, with her head turned toward the viewer. She wears a white dress and has a light blue satin ribbon choker tied in a bow around her neck, her blonde hair is worn up. Her erect posture accentuates the sweep of her exposed neck and the whiteness of her right shoulder, which stands in contrast to the darker tones of the tan and brown background. The canvas is housed in its original giltwood frame, with an egg and leaf border and interior egg and dart band. It is signed on the center left "Helleu" in brown script.
