John Da Costa was a member of the Royal Society of Portraitists and a favorite of the wealthy elites in early twentieth-century New York and Newport. He made an oil sketch of Doris's father, James Buchanan Duke (now in the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.), in 1922 and was commissioned to paint portraits of Doris Duke's grandfather, Washington Duke (posthumously), and James B. Duke for Duke University in 1924. Another version of Da Costa's 1924 James B. Duke portrait now hangs alongside this portrait of Doris Duke at Rough Point.
