Description
A CHINESE EXPORT SEWING TABLE (Chinese, 19th century) composed of black lacquered wood with gilt decoration throughout. The top is decorated with figures in a garden scene and an inner and outer border of foliage decoration. The hinged top opens to reveal a sectioned interior for storing sewing tools. Lidded compartments have gilt painted garden scenes and carved ivory knobs, while smaller compartments have pierced ivory covers and containers for storing thread and needles. A red damask work bag is attached to a sliding panel underneath the main compartment. The table is supported by two lyre-shaped end supports, with a trestle base and stands on four gilt lion paw feet.
