"RAINBOW" (American, dated 1935), an oil on canvas painting by Benjamin Turner Stephenson (American, 1886-1973). In 1934 the Rainbow, skippered by Harold S. Vanderbilt, successfully beat the challenging Endeavor of Great Britain to win the America’s Cup. The Rainbow is depicted with wind in her sail, and crew aboard her deck, as she sails along blue waves with a fair sky in the background. A second ship can be seen in the distance on the lower right of the canvas. The canvas is signed and dated on the bottom right corner. Before being donated to the Preservation Society the canvas previously hung in the library of Harold S. Vanderbilt’s New York apartment.
