Pair of Marble Roundels
A PAIR OF MARBLE ROUNDELS (American, 1888-1892) by Karl Theodore Francis Bitter (American, 1867-1915) framed by wreaths and held by gilt female figures of "Fame", installed above the windows in the main stair landing at Marble House. PSNC.14505.1 features a bas relief profile of Richard Morris Hunt (American, 1827-1895), the architect of Marble House, looking right and reads "AD 1891 / RICH MORRIS HUNT." PSNC.14505.2 features a bas relief profile of Jules Hardouin Mansart (French, 1646-1708), the architect behind much of Versailles, looking to the left and reads "JH MANSART." These roundels were commissioned by Alva Vanderbilt to pay homage to the two architects.
