Description
A jockey scale (English, late 19th century) made by Thornhill & Co., London, with weights by W & T Avery, Birmingham. The scale has a leather seat with brass armrests and a graduated scale to the right. The scale measures the sitter’s weight in stones, 1 stone equals 14 pounds. The scale is marked with the W & T Avery trademark. The wooden frame of the scale bears a placard reading “W. THORNHILL & Co. / NEW BOND STREET / LONDON.” The table form base has brass handles on either end and is carved at center with a floral medallion. A small drawer is suspended beneath. The whole is raised on four block fluted tapered legs with carved flower head medallions at the top and ending in shaped cylindrical feet.
