Carte-de-visite of John H. Clarke wearing a dark jacket and a large black bow tie. Subject has a full beard with no mustache. "John H. Clarke grandfather of Bertha Clarke Carter" is handwritten in ink on reverse. The carte-de-visite was created at A.E. Allen's studio, located at the Arcade on Westminster Street in Providence. An illustration of the Arcade and a two-cent stamp are also on the reverse .
