Description
EIGHT SIDE CHAIRS made by Joseph Meeks & Sons (active 1797-1868), New York City, circa 1840. They are mahogany, in pseudo-Gothic taste. The backrests have arcaded splats surmounted by a roll-over top rail pierced with trefoils at either side of a hand grip. The lower rails are decorated with pierced diamond motifs. The chairs have drop-in seats and are raised on profile cabriole legs. Five are upholstered in sage green floral damask, two in a stripe patterned fabric, and the final chair is upholstered in a navy pattern horsehair fabric.
