Description
Zorzi Corner (died 1527) is shown in a fur-lined red silk cloak offering a chest of gold coins to an allegorical image of the Venetian Republic, the latter indicates from her drapery shrouded throne to the city of Venice in the background. Zorzi Corner was the brother of Caterina, Queen of Cyprus, and he was instrumental in persuading her to turn the island over to Venice. He held vast estates in Cyprus and his wealth was legendary, so much so that after his death the estate was permanently divided. One son commissioned Sansovino to rebuild Ca' Corner della Ca' Grande after a disastrous fire, another commissioned San Michele to rebuild the almost equally vast Ca' Corner-Mocenigo in Campo San Polo after another fire, and a third son was Francesco Corner seen in PSNC.2754.7. The canvas is housed in the original 18th century giltwood frame.
