Description
FRANCESCO CORNER DEFENDS VENICE AGAINST THE LEAGUE OF CAMBRIA IN 1509 (Italian, c. 1700) by Gregorio Lazzarini (Italian, 1655-1730). In this Venetian history painting commissioned for the Ca’Corner, Venice, Francesco Corner is shown in black Procurator's costume pointing to the figure of Bellona appearing on the left with arms of the powers of the League of Cambrai emblazoned upon her shield. She is represented riding on a bull-like "Europa", suggesting that all Europe is united against Venice. The canvas is housed in the original giltwood frame.
Francesco Corner was a son of Zorzi Corner (see PSNC.2754.6) and a nephew of Caterina, Queen of Cyprus. In 1509 he was "Soracomito nelle Guerre fra il Pappa e la Repubblica contra il Duca di Ferrara." In 1522 he became "Procuratore de Ultra" and in 1527 he was named Cardinal.
