Description
GENERAL CATERINO CORNER RECEIVES THE SURRENDER OF A TURKISH CITY (Italian, c. 1698) by Johann Carl Loth (German, 1632-1698). In this Venetian history painting Caterino Corner (1624-1669) is shown with his young son Bernardo (patron of this cycle) accepting a basin with proffered keys from a bowing turbaned ruler and his attendants. Caterino Corner played a major role in the military history of 17th century Venice and was killed while directing operations in the Siege of Candia. His tomb is located in the Santo in Padua. The canvas is house in its original giltwood frame.
