Heavy bronze-colored medal featuring the silhouette of Oliver Hazard Perry. Perry is wearing a militiary uniform with a high color and epaulets. Lettering on front round perimeter of medal reads, "OLIVERUS H. PERRY. PRINCEPS STAGNO ERIENSE. CLASSIM TOTAM CONTUDIT." Reverse depicts a fleet of sailing ships. Around the top edge reads, "VIAM INVENIT VIRTUS AUT FACIT." Below the ships, "INTER CLASS AMERI. ET BRIT. DIE X. SEP. MDCCCXIII." Possible maker's mark also appears on reverse below inscription, "FURST. F"
