Description
A RARE NEWPORT NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER (American, 1764) by Mary Emmes, dated 1764. It was worked in silk threads on a linen ground and is captioned with the verse "Care use with all they power To Serve God every hour" beneath which birds and butterflies flank a central fountain planted with an evergreen in a garden setting. This is followed by a domestic scene featuring a characteristic Newport gambrel-roofed house with blue door and windows and young ladies peering from windows, flanked by an adult male wearing blue overcoat to left and adult female to right wearing yellow dress, set against two flowering trees with birds. The lower register comprises two dogs flanking a flowering garden with central bird atop a blossom. There is an overall trailing floral border signed at the bottom by Mary Emmes. In the original black molded "Hogarth" frame.
