Description
An American Chippendale tall case clock (Newport, c. 1790) attributed to the Townsend-Goddard Workshops, with work by Caleb Wheaton of Providence. The clock case is Santo Domingo mahogany with a tall arched central door with a convex shell carving. The bonnet has four fluted doric colonnettes supporting an arched hood surmounted with a central brass finial - possibly a later addition - of an egale perched atop a sphere. The clock works consist of a silvered dial with black Roman numerals below a smaller painted dial depicting phases of the moon and inscribed with "Caleb Wheaton, Providence" in script. The clock is supported on a square plinth base with four bracketed feet.
