Description
A SET OF GILTWOOD, RED CUT VELVET CHAIRS AND SETTEE (French, 1895). The open-arm settees have backs that roll over top rails, divided into three panels with molded uprights, and are crested by grotesque masks flanked by fishes. They have curved armrests carved with a disc pattern and rest on shaped supports that are formed as two winged female terminal busts. The seat rails are shaped and curved with stylized shells and foliage, while the cabriole legs have pendant bellflowers at knees and ending in claw feet. They are upholstered in red cut velvet of a floral design on a cream ground with three matching pillows. The open armchairs are also upholstered in the red cut velvet. The set of six side chairs and 10 smaller side chairs (pictured) have backs with rollover top rails and molded uprights. Each has pierced splat with heart-carved motifs of foliage. They are also upholstered in cut red velvet.
