Description
A PATINATED BRONZE SCULPTURE OF LE FURIE DI ATAMANTE (Italian, 1892) or "The Madness of Athamas" by Professore Pio Fedi (Italian 1880) and cast by the Galli Sons Foundry in Florence. It is made of patinated bronze and an inscribed plaque at foot of Atamante reads: 'Le Furie Di Atamante/Professore Pio Fedi/ideo E Fece NEL 1880'. Inscription at the rear of the base reads: 'Flli Galli Fusero/Firenze 1892'. The statue depicts dynamic figures of Athamas with his wife, son and baby. Athamas, son of Aelous and King of Thebes, is standing in a state of madness with his left arm stretched over his head holding his young son, Learchus, whom he is about to slay because Juno has driven him to insanity. He looks down at his wife who is at his feet holding their baby. Based on an 1880 plaster by Fedi and considered to be his last masterpiece, it was cast at the artist's expense at the Galli Foundry following his death as a bequest to the Commune of Florence.
