Description
ONE OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF COMMODORE CORNELIUS VANDERBILT (1794-1877) by Jared B. Flagg (1820-1899), (American, dated 1879). The subject is depicted in three-quarter length, facing forward, wearing a black suit with a white shirt and bow tie. His left hand is across his chest, his right hand is resting on a cane. The background is in shades of dark brown. The piece is signed and dated in the lower left "Jared B. Flagg /1879" in red script. The giltwood frame is accented with a carved oak-leaf design.
