Photograph of a Group of People in Costume

Description
Photograph by Ernst Studio depicting guests in Chinese costume assembled in the ballroom of Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish's Newport cottage, "Crossways." They were attendees at a dinner preceding a ball held by Mrs. Alva Belmont at Marble House to celebrate the opening of her newly completed Chinese Tea House.
In addition to their Chinese style costumes some guests wear makeup and wigs to make themselves appear “Asian”, creating a distasteful racist caricature of the group they wished to celebrate.
