Title
Copy Print Photograph of a Group in Costume
Creator
Date
1914
Description
Copy Print of an early photograph of a group of men and women, seated on the floor, dressed in Chinese costume.
In the summer of 1914 Alva Vanderbilt Belmont held an elaborately themed costume ball to celebrate the opening of her newly constructed Chinese Tea House on the grounds of Marble House. The guests dressed in Chinese style costumes and some attendees wore makeup and wigs to make themselves appear to have exaggerated Asian features. Today we recognize this pantomime of an ethnic group as racist.
