Description
ONE STAFFORDSHIRE GLAZED EARTHENWARE SPILL VASE (English, 19th century) molded in the form of a tree trunk with surrounding figures. This satirical scene is based on an engraving by Louis Boitard called "The Tithe Pig", c. 1751, in which a farmer and his wife offer their tithe (1/10 of their produce as a tax) to their local vicar and include with their pig their newborn child. The wife tells the vicar in protest to the tithe that if he does not also take the child they will not hand over the pig. Left to right the figures are: a man in a green coat holding a small pig, a woman holding a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket, and a man/vicar wearing a white wig, black robes and a black hat. The group is surrounded on the base by pigs, bundles of wheat, and a basket of eggs.
