Description
ONE STAFFORDSHIRE BOCAGE FIGURAL GROUP (English, 19th century), the grouping of these figures is based on a satirical engraving by Louis Boitard called "The Tithe Pig", c. 1751, in which a farmer and his wife offer their tithe (1/10 of their produce as a tax) to their local vicar and include along with their pig their newborn child. The wife tells the vicar in protest to the tithe that if he does not also take the child they will not hand over the pig. Here the glazed earthenware figures of the farmer holding a pig, his wife holding their baby, and the vicar in his black robes stand in front of flowering tree on an oblong base with another pig, a basket of eggs, and some sheaths of wheat.
