Description
A MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK (American, late 18th century) with works by Thomas Wright (English, active 1770-1792).The white painted dial is inscribed with the maker’s name "Wright, Watch Maker to the King", Roman numerals denote the hours, inside the hour ring is a subsidiary seconds dial, painted foliate spandrels decorate the corners, and above the clock face in the arch is a strike-silent indicator. The maker’s cipher and the number 37 are stamped on the reverse of the works. The clock case is by an unknown American maker, the arched hood is topped by a central eagle finial, with ball-and-spire finials on the lower sides. The trunk has quarter-round fluted pilasters, which flank a shaped door with a raised panel outlined by astragal molding.
