Description
A colored engraving entitled "Les Hazards heureux de l’Escarpolette" (or "The Swing") (French, c. 1780) by Nicolas de Launay (French, 1739-1792) after a painting of the same name by Jean Honroé Fragonard (French, 1732-1806). In the foreground is a man lying in the grass wearing a light blue waistcoat and a white powdered wig paying homage to his love, who sits on a rope swing with a cushioned seat wearing an elaborate blue and pink silk dress and matching feathered hat, behind her sits a servant, dressed in black, who pushes the swing in a garden setting surrounded by statuary.
Written directly below the edge of the scene on the left is "Pient par H. Fragonard de l'Academie Royale de Pienture et Sculpture", on the right is "Grave par N. De Launay de l'Academie, et de celle des Beaux Arts de Dannemark." Below the title is "Dedies a Monsieur Honore Fragonard/ Peintre du Roi" and "Paris chez De Launey, Graveur du Roi/ par son humble et tres Obeissant Serviteur et Ami De Launey." Along the bottom at center is a putto holding a torch and lighting an oval cartouche bearing the monogram "HF."
