Description
"Portrait of Joseph Peabody" (American, c. 1810) by Michele Felice Corné (1757-1845). The subject, Joseph Peabody (1757-1844) a prominent Salem, MA merchant, is depicted at half-length, facing left, wearing a black jacket with a white high shirt and jabot. In his right hand he holds a long wooden telescope, and hanging from his black pants is a gold pocket watch. The background depicts a cloud-swept sky and a sailing ship flying the American flag. The work is unsigned and housed in a contemporary carved giltwood frame, decorated with applied stars and ropework. Along the bottom center of the frame is a plaque which reads "Joseph Peabody. / 1757 1844 / Painted by / 1752 Michele Felice Corne 1872."
