The subject is depicted seated in a mahogany chair with scrolling arms at three-quarter length, facing left. She wears a lace bonnet with blue ribbons and a lace shawl over a long black dress with a high lace collar. She clutches a small book in her left hand. In the background is an open window looking out onto a tree-filled landscape with blue sky in the distance. The canvas is unsigned and housed in a large contemporary giltwood frame.
