Description
A liquor chest with six gilt-glass liqueur bottles (Flemish, c. 1810). The mahogany chest (.1) is of rectangular form and is raised on four knob-shaped feet. On the sides of the chest are two brass oval mounts with semi-circular bail handles and grape clusters in raised relief. The hinged cover has a rounded front and opens to reveal a pink fabric lined interior with six compartments. In these compartments are six glass liquor bottles with stoppers (.2a-b - .7a-b). The bottles have square straight sided bodies that are slightly arched near the top. The shoulders are painted with gilt decorations of bands of flowering stems and stars, the corners are painted with sun bursts and dangling tassels. Their flaring circular rims are fitted with circular gilt painted glass stoppers. One of the bottles is adhered with its original paper label, which is inscribed in red “DUBB: ORANGE CURACAO LIQUEUR. Fabrique van Wynard Fockink”, indicating that the Orange Curacao, a sweet liqueur made from orange peel, that once filled these bottles came from the Wynand Fockink distillery in Amsterdam.
