Title
A Gilt and Bronze Chandelier
Creator
Date
c. 1897
Description
A gilt and bronze chandelier (American, c. 1897) installed in the billiard room on the first floor of The Breakers. The massive lighting fixture of hand-wrought bronze is supported by a twin armature fastened directly into the steel beams of the house due to its great weight. The frame is suspended from two chains elaborately decorated with scrolled ornament and a heavy traverse rail suspending two similar chains terminating in lamp fitting for electric and gas lights with opaque glass shades.
This chandelier is a replacement for the original Tiffany designed fixture removed by the Vanderbilt family around 1897. Photographs of the room from 1895 by Frank Child show the original chandelier.
