Description
A letter rack (American, 19th century) composed of tortoise shell and gilt silver, retailed by C. Leviele, NY. The rectangular letter rack has an arched top, below is a gilt silver mount in the form of a crowned medallion containing the monogram “GW” (possibly for George Henry Warren), below this are two folding letter slots in the form of bow knots. The gilt silver mounts are stamped with a chamfered rectangular punch containing the letters “JB”, a lion passant, and the London city mark of a leopard’s head within a shield shaped punch. A circular paper sticker on the reserve reads “C. LEVIELE / 23 WEST 36th St., N. Y. C." The whole is supported by an easel back.
