Description
A ruyi scepter (Chinese, Qing Dynasty, 19th century) composed of carved white jade (nephrite). The Chinese term ruyi can be translated to “as you wish”, and scepters of this shape were often presented as gifts. The stem of this scepter is elongated and raised in the center forming a ‘S’ shape which ends in a large, rounded head. The head is carved in low relief with peaches, flowers, and a bat (symbol of strength and happiness). The end of the scepter is carved in low relief with a bamboo stalk and lingzhi.
