Description
A platter (English, 1883) by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons. The oblong majolica platter has a scalloped rim glazed in green and is sectioned into eight panels decorated with chrysanthemum (or possibly thistle) stalks against a white ground, the flower-heads alternate in yellow, red, yellow, and purple. The panels are separated by green rays with incised cross hatching. Written in red underglaze on the underside of the plate is “3271 . Z” and it is impressed “WEDGEWOOD” along with the date code “WLL” (indicating an 1883 production date), the letter “A”, and a diamond cipher.
