Description
A pair of carved round boxes with lids (Chinese, Qianlong period, 1736-1795) made of "cinnabar" (red) lacquer. Each of the domed lids depicts a garden scene containing figures, lakes, boats, waves, and hills all within a narrow fret band and a lotus scroll border. Along the sides of the lid are another lotus scroll band with four panels containing garden scenes. Similarly, the sides of the bases also have a lotus scroll bands with four panels containing figures in gardens. The base rests on a narrow scroll band around the bottom, and a fret band at the footrim.
