Description
Washington Irving (1783-1859), born in New York City 3 April 1783, was the first Americans to succeed as a professional writer. Author of Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, he was greatly admired and imitated in the nineteenth century. After working in England 1815-32, he returned to America to write biographies until his death 28 November 1859 in Tarrytown, New York.
