Description
A Louis XVI style painted wood commode & washstand (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. Each has a mottled grey marble top and is painted light green with the moldings and carvings painted in ivory/cream.
.1 (commode) = The commode has three paneled long drawers, fitted with drop handles. The blocked corners are carved with pendant floral vines. The shaped valanced apron is carved with bell flowers and acanthus leaves. The whole is supported on four short cabriole legs carved with scrolling leaves.
.2 (washstand) = Raised above its marble top, the washstand has a matching upper shelf. Beneath the top is a single paneled long drawer with two drop handles. The whole is raised on four slender cabriole legs carved with acanthus leaves at the knees, trailing bell flowers, and ending in curled foliate toes.
