Postcard correspondence from Ella Rives King to Gwendolen King
Creator
Date
Dated 24 February 1912
Description
Correspondence to Gwendolen King Armstrong (Mrs. E. M. Armstrong) from her mother Ella Rives King (Mrs. David King). The letter was written on board the RMS Olympic, one of the largest vessels built for the White Star Line shipping company as one of three Olympic-class ocean-liners. It's sister ships were the Titanic and the Britannic. It was the largest ocean liner in the world between 1911 and 1913, it's status briefly claimed by the Titanic. Of the three Olympic-class liners, only the Olympic enjoyed a long career. The Titanic famously struck an iceberg and sank on her maiden voyage in 1912, and the Britannic sank in 1916 after striking a German naval mine in the Aegean Sea. The Olympic remained the largest British-built liner until the launch of the Queen Mary in 1934, and was withdrawn from service in 1935.
