Description
A suite of chairs in the late 17th century taste (American, 1892-1895) made by William Baumgarten & Co., NY, designed by Emile Baumgarten (American, 1865-1922) for use in The Breakers Billiard Room. The suite is composed of two armchairs (.1-.2) and four side chairs (.3-.6), all of which are composed out of carved mahogany with green velvet upholstered back rests and square seats which are fringed with gold tassels.
.1-.2 (armchairs) = The matching armchairs have a crest rail carved with a grotesque mask and scrolling foliage with raised square foliate finials on either side. The molded armrests end in foliate scrolls and rest on turned supports. The square seat is supported by four turned legs joined by a blocked H-stretcher. The central stretcher is carved with small foliate forms. The front two legs are raised on casters while the back two end in ball feet.
