Description
A Louis XV style chair suite (American, late 19th century) designed by Ogden Codman, Jr. (American, 1863-1951) and attributed to the manufacturer A. H. Davenport Co., Boston and East Cambridge, MA. All the pieces in the suite are caned with frames painted in light green and the moldings and carvings painted in ivory/cream. The suite consists of:
.1-.2 = A pair of bergères with a low, horseshoe-shaped cane paneled back surmounted by floral cresting, padded armrests on curved supports, a caned seat with a molded rail carved at center with floral sprays (similar to cresting), and four cabriole legs carved at the knees with flower-heads and trailing leaves.
.3-.8 = A set of six side chairs with tall cartouche shaped backs with a cane panel and molded border carved at the crest and shoulders with flowers and foliage, shaped caned seats, four cabriole legs carved at the knees with flower-heads and trailing leaves, and a molded seat rail carved at center with a flower-head framed by scrolling.
.9 = A settee with a serpentine shaped back inset with three cane panels and a molded frame surmounted by a central foliate cresting, open armrests on curved supports, a shaped caned seat with a rail carved with floral decoration, and six cabriole legs carved at the knees with flower-heads. .10 = A writing chair with a horseshoe-shaped back filled with double panels of canework surrounded by a molded border carved at the crest with small flower sprays, a shaped caned seat with a molded rail carved with foliate decoration, and four cabriole legs carved at the knees with flowers. .11-.12 = A pair of stools of square form with serpentine sides, a caned seat, a molded rail carved with floral sprays, and four cabriole legs carved at the knees with flower-heads and trailing leaves.
